Our Story
Arthur Borel and Kenny Bacon served together on the command staff of the fire department in Indianapolis Indiana. As Arthur readied for retirement and Kenny returned to life in the fire companies, they identified a need; the thousands of fire hydrants in their city needed tested, painted, flushed and maintained. They knew that they had a large pool of people who had a special affection for fire hydrants, who's safety and success on the fire ground depended on reliable and well-maintained fire hydrants.
Together Arthur and Kenny had access to a very large, highly trained and motivated work force, the professional firefighters of the area, who are always looking for ways to supplement their incomes on their off-duty time, and thus, Diversified Hydrant and Equipment Services was born.
A quick "Google Search" will show that there are very few companies nationwide, that cater solely to fire hydrant painting, care and maintainance. In the past few years DHES has visually inspected and painted thousands of hydrants in Indianapolis and the surrounding communities using local active and retired firefighters. This is a formula that will work in every community, dedicated professionals caring for the vital appliances needed to keep their community safe.
The United States was the first place to use the more iconic fire hydrant. Philadelphia was the first city with a standing fire hydrant. Designed by Fredrick Grant Sr. in 1803, the hydrant was a metal pipe attached to the water main that extended above grade that had a valve on it and was threaded to allow the connection of fire hose to it.
There are presently 8.9 million fire hydrants in the United States.Citizens Energy Group of Indianapolis presently maintains 20,000 hydrants in Marion and surrounding counties in Indiana.
Hydrants are not only used for fire protection but are routinely used for flushing water mains, testing chlorine residuals, street and sewer cleaning, and providing water for construction purposes. Hydrants must always remain operable and capable of providing adequate fire-flow as that is their primary function.
